combine "sometimes"
I would like to manually control the grouping/combining of windows.
Say I've got a whole load of browser windows open - email, work, literature, other work, social, games, etc. Then I'd like all the "work" windows to combine (with the thumbnail preview on mouse hover, etc) to one icon, and the "social" windows on another icon.
I would also like to be able to manually create icons (say, dragging the thumbnails onto the taskbar) and rearrange which windows are on which icon (dragging the thumbnails onto the wanted icon).
I know the ApplicationID system might make this difficult but hopefully it's doable!

For now, the only options you have are using the "decombine on mouse hover" or "decombine active" options, or using Taskbar Inspector. As for the another thing: It happens because when you drag Skype into Outlook, you change Skype window's AppID to Outlook's. You can see it with Taskbar Inspector. To avoid this, you can right-click-drag Outlook out of the taskbar first (that will give it a random AppID), and then drag Skype into it.

Ah! another thing: say I open Outlook and Skype, and right-click drag Skype into Outlook, which creates a single group with an Outlook icon. If I then close them both and reopen Skype, it opens with an Outlook icon and groups together with any new Outlook windows. Should I open new bug report? Also, in my last comment, I meant "right-click drag" - sorry!

It works fine when icons are not combined (i.e. setting Don't combine grouped items), but I can't break groups when they are combined into a single item. I'd like to be able to left-click drag thumbnails rather than instance icons.

Have you tried the "Drag within/between groups using right mouse button" option?
